Joana Santos stands in a crowd, covered in blue light

Writer/director Laura Carreira joins us after the film to discuss her feature debut, a moving character study of a Portuguese migrant working as a picker in a Scottish warehouse.

Aurora (Joana Santos) is a lonely Portuguese migrant working as a warehouse picker, who struggles to forge connections in this immersive character study that also shines light on the precarity of modern employment. Aurora’s workdays are dictated by the bleep of a machine and her evenings are strained by loneliness in shared accommodation as she dreams of securing a better job.

Winner of the London Film Festival’s Sutherland Award for debut feature films, On Falling is an empathetic social realist snapshot that offers a window into the financial precariousness of the gig economy, delivered with a lightness of touch that stresses the importance of everyday connection.
