Miracles and myths abound, from Bartók’s surreal ballet to Sibelius’s Finnish landscape – plus, a captivating new piece by Golfam Khayam.
Syrinx attempts to escape the god Pan in Debussy’s evocative work for solo flute. Luonnotar is about the very origins of the earth, while Vivier’s Orion depicts the mysteries of outer space. Khayam’s Je ne suis pas une fable à conter is based on a poem by Ahmad Shamlou, one of the most iconic cultural figures in Iran.
The ‘Miracle’ of Haydn’s optimistic Symphony No 96 was, according to some reports, that a chandelier didn’t land on the audience. The Miraculous Mandarin, meanwhile, defies death in one of Bartók’s most thrilling scores.
Barbara Hannigan sings with and conducts the LSO at its full, magnificent capacity.
Please note that the order of the pieces being performed has been updated compared to the original listing.
This performance will end at approximately 8.45pm, including a 20-minute interval (timings subject to change).
