Black Sound

The Story of British Black Music

Black Sound moving image display

This spring, the Barbican Music Library hosts Black Sound, a groundbreaking exhibition that demonstrates the outsized impact British Black music has had on the world stage.

Black Sound celebrates the DIY spirit of British Black music, spanning jazz, lovers’ rock, jungle, grime, and drill that has powered British Black music from the margins to the global stage.

Highlighting artists who created their own platforms, audiences, and spaces, often without mainstream support, this exhibition invites the public to contribute, preserving this collective history for future generations.

Through vintage mixtapes, iconic magazine covers, and fly-posted walls, visitors explore how movements like grime and lovers' rock reshaped the sound of Britain. Experience how these genres have evolved into powerful statements of identity and resistance, continuing to inspire future artists today.
