Werckmeister Harmonies (12) 4K Restoration

A man looks deep into the eyes of a large whale.

The circus arrives to a small village, along with a giant whale and a mysterious man called The Prince, in this classic arthouse film from Hungary.

Made up of 39 gradual black and white shots, the film follows János and his uncle György during the communist era in Hungary. When the circus visits, a sinister shadow falls over their small village.

A classic arthouse film that has received wide acclaim since its release, Werckmeister Harmonies ranked 171st in the critics' poll and 132nd in the directors' poll in the 2012 British Film Institute's decennial Sight & Sound film poll.

Werckmeister Harmonies was directed by Béla Tarr and Ágnes Hranitzky in 2000, based on the 1989 novel The Melancholy of Resistance by László Krasznahorkai.
