Destabilising 20th-Century Art Histories through Curatorial Practices

Panel Discussion

Gieve Patel, Off Lamington Road, 1982-86.

Organised in collaboration with The Courtauld, this panel discussion explores comparative frameworks outside South Asia and asks how curatorial practices can destabilise established art histories.

The talk explores the limits of conventional terminologies and art periods when talking about art from places deemed marginal. It looks at the ways artists relate to socio-political upheavals, noting the overlap between international, regional and national politics. How can this be captured in exhibitions?

Exhibitions of artworks from outside their places of origin are often guided by a reductive, explanatory logic. Through ambitious curatorial projects, the panellists have sought to move beyond this. What are the challenges? How can artists' work be illuminated? How do curatorial practices aid in the unmaking of art historical conventions?

With Dr Sam Bardaouil, Co-Director of the Hamburger Bahnhof; Osei Bonsu, curator of International Art at Tate Modern; Dr Shanay Jhaveri, Head of Visual Arts at the Barbican; and Dr Devika Singh, Senior Lecturer in Curating at The Courtauld.
