Sir Mark Elder presents two 20th-century masterpieces by Elgar and Sibelius, including a work that with a deep connection to both orchestra and soloist – Elgar’s Violin Concerto.
The Violin Concerto is a part of London Symphony Orchestra history. It was written with support from the Orchestra’s Leader, William H Reed, and premiered by the LSO in 1910, a year before the composer went on to become Principal Conductor. The resonances don’t end there: the work was premiered by the legendary violinist Fritz Kreisler, whose Stradivari instrument is now played by Nikolaj Szeps-Znaider. As Szeps-Znaider and the LSO come together on the Barbican stage, expect a performance of innate sensitivity and insight.
Sibelius’ Fourth Symphony was premiered a year after Elgar’s Violin Concerto. Its aura of apprehension seems to reflect the atmosphere in Europe in the years preceding World War I and the composer’s own personal troubles, heard in its poignant song-like passages and abrupt changes of mood.
Duration to be confirmed closer to the event. It includes a 20 minute interval.
