Arcadi Volodos in recital

Arcadi Volodos sitting at piano

Arcadi Volodos is a pianist who sets his own standards: this recital pairs Volodos’s beloved Schubert with music from the dark heart of Russian romanticism.

‘You can keep your Lang Langs, your Yuja Wangs’ writes Gramophone, ‘I’d swap their collective virtuosity for one evening of Arcadi Volodos’s consummate pianism.’ But then, this extraordinary Russian virtuoso is a keyboard poet with a habit of evoking strong emotions.

His last appearance at the Barbican certainly made a deep impression – and it’s true that no-one plays Schubert quite like him. ‘His deeply considered performance, delivered with the keenest sense of the work’s expansive structure, comprised a masterly overview in which even the tiniest detail assumed its rightful place’ wrote The Guardian. Tonight he sets Schubert’s Sonata against the brooding passions of Scriabin and Rachmaninov; a recital to illuminate and astound.

The performance is expected to finish around 9.20pm, including a 20 minute interval.
