The artist Clare Bassett lives in London and Gloucestershire, but grew up in Montreal and the monolithic figures in her work have echoes of northern Canada’s Inuit art.
The distinctive printed textures achieved are enhanced by hand-colouring each print. Her people are grounded and solid, yet can seem confused and uncertain. Unsettling, humorous and surreal are comments used to describe her work. Some images are simply playful, while others invite us into a place familiar, yet strange. We are left asking ‘What is their world’?
