Parent & Baby Screening: The Glass Castle (12A)

Film still from The Glass Castle

Four siblings must learn to look after themselves as they grow up with their difficult parents, in this adaptation based on the bestselling memoir by former New York columnist Jeannette Walls.

This remarkable story stars Brie Larson as Jeannette, a young girl growing up in a dysfunctional family. Her father Rex (Woody Harrelson) is a brilliant and charismatic character but also an alcoholic, alongside her mother Rose Mary (Naomi Watts) who doesn’t want to take on the work of raising a family.

During her adolescence, Jeannette’s father forces the family to live a nomadic lifestyle, moving around a series of homes in West Virginia in order to find work. As the oldest sibling, Jeannette decides to try and take charge, confronting their father about the need for change. When she is finally old enough, Jeanette leaves for college, determined to build a successful life on her own terms.

This is a wonderful tale of unconditional love, directed by Destin Daniel Cretton.
