Barbican announces Jaubi and Tara Lily

Jaubi stand in black and white.

Hailing from Lahore, Pakistan, instrumental outfit Jaubi unveil their latest album in a special performance at the Barbican celebrating the depths of South Asian artistry.

Jaubi’s music defies genre and embodies the spirit of ‘whatever/whoever’. The group comprises Ali Riaz Baqar (guitar and composer), Zohaib Hassan Khan (sarangi), and Kashif Ali Dhani (tablas and percussion).

In their Barbican Hall debut, Jaubi will unveil their second album, A Sound Heart (Riaz Records, 2024). Inspired by a verse from the Qur'an, A Sound Heart explores the idea of a spiritually healthy and content heart, rooted in love and sincerity. Meditative ragas blend with Herbie Hancock-esque motifs, contemporary melodies with the intricate sounds of the sarangi, and the earthy rhythms of the tabla to create a rich tapestry of sound. The album and performance features long time collaborators Tenderlonious & Latarnik as well as members from the wider collective, Horatio Luna, Nick Walters and Tim Carnegie.

Jaubi will be playing alongside Tara Lily, a south London, British Bengali musician whose style stitches together R&B, jazz, electronic, and traditional sounds. A classically trained jazz musician, she has collaborated with the likes of Theo Croker and King Krule.
