Communications Assistant, Visual Arts & Immersive

Starting Salary: £30,180 Inclusive of London Weighting

The Business 
The Barbican Communications team is looking for a passionate Communications Assistant to work across our Visual Arts and Barbican Immersive campaigns. 

The Barbican is home to the most exciting art from around the world, pushing traditional artistic boundaries to entertain and inspire millions of people, create connections, provoke debate, and reflect the world we live in. Our Visual Arts programme embraces art, architecture, design, fashion, photography and film from artists across the world. Our Barbican Immersive programme explores contemporary culture, emerging technology and digital creativity, bringing together art, design, science and research to create memorable experiences.

The Role
In this role you will report to the Communications Manager and work closely with other members of the Communications team to provide administrative and coordination support for campaigns that promote our exhibitions and events in the press and media. 

You will regularly participate in Communications team meetings and activities, as well as Visual Arts and Barbican Immersive project meetings. This role will involve handling general press enquiries, managing image and ticket requests, and assisting in the planning and delivery of press events. You will help maintain office systems, update essential documentation, and assist with financial administration. You will also research and stay abreast of arts sector news and the latest trends in arts journalism, using this knowledge to help build our database of contacts. Additionally, you will liaise with departments across the Barbican and support the team in dealing with external stakeholders including commercial galleries, photographers and PR agencies.

The Person

The ideal candidate will have experience of working in a busy office, ideally within an arts or exhibitions environment. You will have excellent copy writing and verbal communication skills as well as good computer and database skills. It is essential that you have excellent planning and organisational skills, including the ability to manage time sensitive tasks in a structured way. An ideal candidate will also have a love of visual arts, a curiosity in audience-focused cultural experiences, and an interest in the arts news and media landscape.
