Josephine Foster

Joined by a band including guitarist Victor Herrero and drummer Alex Neilson (Trembling Bells), Josephine accompanies herself on guitar, piano, organ, harp and autoharp, borrowing from spirituals, classical and experimental music on a collection of deeply personal songs. And then there’s her voice – an arresting and undulating soprano, operatic and otherworldly.

Since emerging as part of the New Weird America scene in the early 2000s, Josephine’s music has always defied easy categorisation. Over the past decade, she’s taken in German Lieder, Spanish folk songs, and interpretations of poetry by Lorca and Emily Dickinson.

Opening the night is Saloli, the solo project of Portland’s Mary Sutton, who creates emotive deep-listening pieces for analog synthesizer. Performing from her latest Kranky release in London for the first time.
