Bach ‘was writing this music for a very specific moment, for a very specific time of year, in a very specific liturgy in a parochial context’ says Gardiner. ‘And yet such is the breadth of his vision that it can reach us now.’ These four works speak directly about eternal things – and these performers have genuinely lived with them.
