UK Premiere: The Hidden Tiger (15*)

Part of: Chronic Youth Film Festival

Affonso Uchoa's The Hidden Tiger

The UK premiere from Affonso Uchoa (Araby) that blends documentary and fiction to draw attention to the harsh realities of the young inhabitants of the Contagem district of Brazil.

Juninho, Eldo, Adilson, Menor and Neguinho live in Nacional, a poor neighbourhood on the outskirts of Contagem. Following their day-to-day life, this docu-drama reveals the poetics of the everyday and the conflicts they face as they try to carve out lives amid the crime that threatens to swallow them whole.

Affonso Uchoa made The Hidden Tiger after noticing many residents of his working-class neighbourhood were employed in the film industry but only in low-paid jobs, and never in front of the camera. The result is a street-cast film perceptive to the nuances of the quotidian in a way only an insider could understand.

Capturing the golden light of Brazil, Uchoa’s photography elevates its gritty social realism to high art - recalling the works of Pedro Costa and Charles Burnett.
