Wealdstone Youth Workshop with Silo Studio Showcase

Part of Make! A Season of Contemporary Craft

Wealdstone Youth Workshop with Silo Studio

Take a seat on a stool with a difference. The Barbican Shop showcases a new range of furniture designed by the youth of Wealdstone, for north-west London and the world.

Wealdstone Youth Workshop is a public design project in collaboration with the youth of Wealdstone, north-west London, who were brought together by regeneration agency Spacemakers to design and make public furniture for use across their community.

Over the last year, six local teenagers have worked with Silo Studio to research, design and produce furniture. The Wealdstone Leg is their response – a new, modular furniture component, which forms the basis of a range of stools, benches and chairs for use in the forthcoming Wealdstone Square.

The project aims to get young people inside the process of regenerating their community; give them a paid route into an industry that doesn’t currently exist in the area; and help to alter perceptions in the community, of both young people and Wealdstone itself.

Wealdstone Youth Workshop is part of a wider project by Harrow Council to create Wealdstone Square – a new public space at the centre of Wealdstone that can bring the community together. The overall project is led by architecture and urbanism practice We Made That, with graphic design by Europa. The project is supported by the Greater London Authority’s London Regeneration Fund and is part of Harrow Council's Building a Better Harrow programme.
