Talk: Jason Moran on Noah Davis and music making

Noah Davis: Talks and Events

Jason Moran standing in a doorway. The back half of his body is obscured by the door frame, and he is turning to face the camera. His reflection is visible in a mirror behind him.

Join American jazz pianist and composer Jason Moran in the Art Gallery as he explores different contexts for music making, taking inspiration from the paintings of Noah Davis.

Through his activities as an artist, curator and community builder, Los Angeles-based artist Noah Davis sought to make culture more accessible to audiences outside of institutional spaces. He captures this sentiment in his 2014 series of paintings Pueblo del Rio, which places dancers and musicians in the streets of the titular housing project in Los Angeles.

Taking these paintings as a starting point, Moran considers what it might mean to relocate music making outside of the concert hall, and how this might give way to the generative possibilities of ‘composing from life.’

Noah Davis is on view in our Art Gallery from 6 Feb to 11 May.
