Black Arsenal Book Launch: Club, Culture and Identity
Celebrate the launch of this new book by Dr Clive Chijioke Nwonka and Matthew Harle on Arsenal and Black identity featuring some very special guests including former Arsenal midfielder Paul Davis.
Arsenal Football Club has come to be understood as the locus of everyday Black identification through its historic association not just with Black London, but Black identities globally.
Returning to the Barbican Centre to launch the new book, Black Arsenal: Club, Culture and Identity, this discussion will draw on a number of voices and perspectives connected to Arsenal, from its former players, its fanbases, and from the world of music and entertainment to reflect on Arsenal’s relationship with Black Britain and beyond through the club’s representation of Black footballers, the creation of Black iconographies, and a cross generational Black fanbase and spectatorship.
Speakers at the event will be Dr Clive Chijioke Nwonka, Paul Davis, Clive Palmer. Additional panel members will be confirmed nearer the time.
Dr Clive Chijioke Nwonka is an Associate Professor of in Film, Culture and Society at University College London, and co-editor/author of Black Arsenal: Club, Culture and Identity.
Paul Davis is a former Arsenal midfielder who made over 500 appearances for the cub between 1980 -1995.
Clive Palmer is a contributor to the ArsenalVision podcast.

Barbican Cinema 1 is located within the main Barbican building on Level -2. Head to Level G and walk towards the Lakeside Terrace where you’ll find stairs and lifts to take you down to the venue floor.

Access
Level access from the Pit floor foyer only to the two boxes (see Mobility below). All other seats lead off stepped aisles.
Mobility
Two boxes at the rear of the auditorium each have space for one wheelchair user and a companion. Please book early and ask for these seats.
Assistance dogs
Assistance dogs may be taken into the cinema – please tell us when booking, to ensure your seat has enough space. If you prefer, you may leave your dog with a member of the foyer staff during the performance.
Hearing facility
There is an induction loop in the auditorium. You can use this by adjusting your hearing aid to the ‘T’ setting.
