Communications Officer (Music)

Barbican Centre

The Barbican is an international arts, conference and education centre in the heart of the City of London. We are London’s Creative Catalyst for arts, curiosity and enterprise. Across our theatres, concert halls, cinemas, galleries, business venues and public and community spaces, we spark creative possibilities and transformation for artists, audiences, and communities – to inspire, connect and provoke debate. We are the place to be and a place where everyone is welcome. Our impact is felt far outside our walls and ripples beyond the experiences we offer – locally, nationally and internationally.

The Role

We are looking for an experienced and motivated individual to join our Music Communications team and wider Communications department to contribute to the promotion of our arts and learning programming. Reporting to the Communications Manager for Music it will be your role to develop and deliver creative audience-focused communications campaigns across the breadth of our varied Music programme to showcase everything the Barbican has to offer and to support audience development, in collaboration with the rest of the Music Communications team.

The primary focus of the role is on press and media (newspapers, radio, magazines, television, and online coverage among others) and you will have direct responsibility for proactive and reactive media handling – driving positive preview, listings and review coverage and identifying potential risks, in collaboration with the Communications Manager. You’ll also work adjacent to our marketing and digital teams to ensure communications strategies, campaigns and tactics are fully integrated across all channels as well as working with our Creative Collaboration team on our learning and community programmes, when Music related. You’ll also build good relationships with key stakeholders within your artform including members of the press but also with our resident and associate companies, producers, record labels, agents, artists, curators and performers, where relevant.

The Person

Our ideal candidate will be confident working directly with media and a range of stakeholders. You will be a committed team player, and a confident and diplomatic communicator. Part of the role involves regularly attending concerts and running press desks and does therefore entail occasional evening and weekend work.

A passion for the arts is crucial. Strong experience in and a working knowledge of the music industry, a passion for live music, and a demonstrable knowledge of both classical and contemporary music genres would be a clear advantage.

Barbican Benefits

We offer a wide range of staff benefits including a great pension scheme, season ticket, cycle to work scheme, free access to museums and galleries, discounts on retail, healthcare and on-site cafes and restaurants. You will have access to Employee Assistance Programme, trained Mental Health First aiders and City of London staff networks.
