Janáček’s searing, magnificent opera explores a woman’s limited options in a suffocating small town.
Jenůfa is pregnant, but she isn’t married. In her mountain village, this means disgrace, or even death. Her stepmother, Kostelnička, wants to help her, but what should she do?
Janáček pondered his characters’ predicament for many years. The opera he eventually completed is a blazing vision of human suffering and redemption, rooted in the rhythms of everyday life.
Conductor Emeritus Sir Simon Rattle and the LSO have presented two of Janáček’s operas to critical acclaim, and this is the next instalment. Jenůfa brings together a remarkable cast, including Agneta Eichenholz’s heartbreaking portrayal of a vulnerable young woman and Katarina Karnéus’ achingly powerful Kostelnička.

Change of soloist
Due to personal reasons, Asmik Grigorian has been forced to withdraw from the LSO’s performances of Janáček’s Jenůfa on 11 and 14 January 2024. The role of Jenůfa will now be sung by Agneta Eichenholz. Existing ticket holders are in the process of being be notified.

Mobility
Spaces for wheelchair users in row U at the rear of the stalls (up to sixteen, depth of row 180cm) and the back row of the circle (four), both with fold-down companion seats. Some seats in row S of the stalls for people with very limited mobility.
Assistance dogs
Assistance dogs may be taken into the concert hall where there are a limited number of suitable seats in row G of the stalls. If you prefer, you may leave your dog with a member of the cloakroom staff during the performance.
Hearing facility
There is an induction loop in the concert hall. You can use this by adjusting your hearing aid to the ‘T’ setting.
