On this week's edition we focus on two films by British director Andrew Haigh. We get insight from the director himself about his 2015 film 45 Years, and a different perspective from lead actor Charlie Plummer on its follow up Lean on Pete.
We begin with 45 Years, which stars Charlotte Rampling and Tom Courtenay as couple Kate and Geoff, who we find happy and heading toward their 45th wedding anniversary. A letter arrives forcing them to examine the foundation of their marriage and relationship to this point.
‘For me what happens in the film is both of the characters' focus in their world loses meaning – and Geoff manages to kind of find his meaning back again, but for Kate it’s a harder thing to put back together again.' – Andrew Haigh
Next we look at Haigh’s next feature, Lean on Pete – a beautiful piece of cinema – staring Plummer as Charlie, a teenager who finds work for a horse trainer (played by Steve Buscemi) and befriends fading racehorse, Lean on Pete.
‘An untraditional love story – to have a scene partner that has these beautiful huge eyes and is so expressive, and decides to do what he wants when he wants for a lot of the time!’ – Charlie Plummer
