Stanley Spencer
The Apotheosis of Love
A centenary tribute to Stanley Spencer, celebrating his imaginative vision and extraordinary contribution to twentieth-century British art.
The exhibition focused on Spender’s unrealised Church-House scheme, which would have incorporated most, if not all, his imaginative figure compositions from the 1930s until his death in 1959.
By bringing the most personal and visionary of Spencer's late works together to create, in spirit, something of what he had intended for his homage to love the Church-House, the exhibition aimed to reveal the true personality of one of Britain's most original painters. The Church-House would have been a testament to all that Spencer believed and a memorial to everything he loved.
The exhibition was selected by John Hoole, Curator, and organised by Barbican Art Gallery.
