James Ensor
Theatre of Masks 1860-1949
—
A rare opportunity to see an exhibition devoted to James Ensor, Belgium’s foremost expressionist artists.
The exhibition traced the development of James Ensor (1860-1949), taking the late 1880s as a turning point – the years that saw the artist produce visionary landscapes and expressionist paintings laced with religious themes. The fantastic and the macabre ever a fascination, the carnival became Ensor’s primary subject, a vehicle for his searing criticism of Belgian society and an articulation of his preoccupation with death.
