The first exhibition focusing on the photographic representation of Native American subjects during the second half of the 19th century.
Including over 500 images, with interpretative commentaries and photographic work by contemporary Native artists and scholars, the exhibition introduced visitors to native history and culture and explored and challenged the stereotypes of Native Americans as a ‘vanishing’ race which were prevalent at the time. The exhibition posed questions about how to read these images and what truth, if any, they convey. In particular, the implications of the recording of the exotic other was addressed and deconstructed.
