A celebration of Martin Parr’s ironic, playful work which revitalised social documentary photography in Britain.
From his poignant black and white photos from the 70s, to his lurid and lucid colour work from the 80s, the photography of Martin Parr offers us a tantalising view into worlds we thought we knew.
The melancholy of a Jubilee tea laid out in rain and a rugby stand laid waste by neglect - remnants of disappearing traditions and changing values. The photographer's dead pan self-portraits as astronaut and body builder, and holidaymakers enduring leisure on New Brighton Beach - Martin Parr's satirical photographs captured our thwarted aspirations, foibles and comical preoccupations.
Curated by Val Williams, the exhibition was originated by Barbican Art Gallery, the National Museum of Photography, Film and Television, Bradford and Magnum Photos, London.
