Vienna: Light and Darkness

London Schools Symphony Orchestra/Julian Libeer

Portrait photo of Julien Libeer

Award-winning Belgian pianist Julien Libeer joins London’s premier youth ensemble as soloist for Beethoven’s zestiest piano concerto.

The young Beethoven dazzled the audience at its 1795 premiere in Vienna with ‘great velocity of finger, extreme delicacy of touch and intense feeling.’ Libeer has been described as ‘The complete musician, who unites, at any musical moment, a true understanding of the piece, a solid intellectual approach and an infallible instinct for the impalpable.’ (Maria João Pires)

The concert begins with the powerfully evocative Sea Interludes from Britten’s most popular opera Peter Grimes and concludes in fiery tragedy, with the symphony often described as Brahms’s farewell to the Austrian capital he adored.
