Step behind the scenes and see the Barbican Theatre from a new perspective on our 90 minute Backstage Tours

In these exclusive backstage tours for schools, you’ll learn how the architects incorporated the theatre into the building’s design and hear secrets of past productions as you roam the colourful floors of our backstage labyrinth. Peek into the stage wings, Green Room, orchestra pit and more in our working theatre. You’ll get a closer look at set design mechanisms and get insight into the technology which makes a show come to life. Highlights include the impressive fly tower - a specialist hoisting system used to switch sets on the stage below. Taking you up, over and below our renowned stage, our Backstage Tours will give you the opportunity to enjoy a different experience of the theatre. School bookings will have an exclusive tour for up to 30 students from Key Stage 3 and above split into two groups, led by our expert guides.

Each year, we commission a theatre artist or company to design a box with ideas, inspirations and provocations to spark imagination in young theatremakers and performers. In 2013, renowned masters of storytelling Complicite accepted the challenge.

In 2014, we welcomed back innovative theatre company, and pioneers of collaborative theatre making, Complicite, to curate a unique box with one objective – to help inspire and create exciting theatre with young people throughout London.

For the 2017 Barbican Box, we invited Toneelgroep Amsterdam to curate a box filled with props, prompts and inspirations to help introduce young students from around London to theatre making.
