Sir Simon Rattle conducts an outstanding cast in a concert performance of Wozzeck: Berg’s shattering tragedy of one man’s struggle with a brutal world.
’Poor people like us! We’ll always be wretched, in this world or the next.’ The humble soldier Wozzeck is no saint. But he’s desperately, hopelessly human, and Alban Berg’s masterpiece tells his tale in music of raw compassion and uncompromising emotional power.
This is one of those pieces that demands everything that its performers can give it, and with one of our greatest living Lieder singers, Christian Gerhaher, as Wozzeck plus the sublime Anja Kampe as his mistress Marie, this performance has the potential to stab straight to the heart. Peter Hoare and the great John Tomlinson also feature in the cast, all swept along by a conductor for whom Berg’s music has always been a defining experience.
Duration to be confirmed closer to the event. It includes a 20 minute interval.
