Witch: We Intend to Cause Havoc (12)

Mixing together funk, blues, psychedelia and rock made Witch the most popular band in Zambia of the 1970s. But after economic difficulties in the 1980s, alongside government authoritarianism, it became more difficult for musicians, and Witch couldn't stay together. 

This good-hearted film seeks to find Witch and build upon the successful reissues of their music in the 2010s, finding a whole new audience. 

Much the focus is on Witch’s frontman, Emanyeo ‘Jagari’ Chanda, the hugely charismatic singer, writer and performer, who remains one of the last surviving original members of the band.  “I find myself mining gemstones instead of making music”, he says. “It can’t just end here…this is a new beginning.” 

With an unsurprisingly fantastic soundtrack, this film celebrates the band’s legacy and influence, and tracks their new lease of life.
