Total Immersion: Shiva Feshareki and Stockhausen

BBC SO Total Immersion: Symphonic Electronics

A headshot of Shiva Feshareki, with circular blue swirls around her. In the background are pink and white wavy shapes suggestive of soundwaves.

Vintage Stockhausen plus a new adventure from British-Iranian composer and sonic explorer Shiva Feshareki – the world premiere of her Barbican commission for the BBC Symphony Orchestra.

Feshareki says 'Bab-Khaneh' is the ancient Persian term that translates as 'gatehouse on the wall'. It's likely the origin of 'Barbican', the gatehouse to Roman Londinium before it was destroyed, later becoming the architectural marvel and arts centre of today. The piece acts as a sonic survey of the Hall’s acoustics and design: using the Hall and a custom immersive soundsystem as instruments, Feshareki sculpts her spatial performance from scratch, intertwining orchestral and electronic sound.

Karlheinz Stockhausen never let his imagination be chained to any one world. In his final electronic work, he imagined himself weaving music 'as if I had to compose the orbits of 24 moons or 24 planets'. Cosmic Pulses, his 2007 cult classic, was the result – a late, dizzyingly imaginative vision from one of the defining geniuses of our time.

This performance will finish at approximately 10pm, including a 20-minute interval

Co-produced by the Barbican and BBC Symphony Orchestra
