London Symphony Orchestra/Sir Antonio Pappano
Walker, Bernstein & Walton, with Carolin Widmann

Bringing together Walton’s turbulent first Symphony with passionate statements of love and outrage from two American greats.
Walker’s Sinfonia No 5, 'Visions' was his final work, composed when he was 96. It was written in response to a shocking act of racial violence. The composer’s outrage can be heard in its steely outbursts, restless energy, and urgent, jagged harmonies.
Bernstein has lively and learned conversations about love with writers from ancient Greece in his Serenade for violin and orchestra.
Walton’s powerful Symphony No 1 is a blistering journey from personal turmoil to a well-earned, celebratory ending.
The LSO and Pappano are the perfect team for these intensely dramatic works. Carolin Widmann brings her radiant playing to Bernstein’s most passionate music.
Change of soloist
Janine Jansen has the flu and, whilst hoping to be well enough to perform with the LSO this week, she has regretfully had to take the decision to withdraw from the concert on 6 February. The LSO is extremely grateful to Carolin Widmann for agreeing to step in as soloist for Leonard Bernstein’s Serenade at very short notice.
Posted 5 February 3.25pm
The concert will finish at approximately 9.15pm (timings subject to change)
