London Symphony Orchestra/ Half Six Fix – Berlioz
Symphonie fantastique, with Sir Antonio Pappano
Kick-start your evening with a 60-minute Half Six Fix concert. Introduced by the performers, with screens in the hall to bring you closer to the action.
Hector Berlioz’s music was steeped in fantasy. Guided by his powerful, sometimes dark imagination, the French composer created bold, inventive music that was seething with drama, inspired as much by his turbulent personal life as the world around him.
Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique traces a wild plot, as the ‘artist’ protagonist, driven mad with love for a woman, takes opium and embarks on a series of hallucinations. It’s a tempestuous musical journey, taking listeners from waltzes to nightmarish visions.
Berlioz’s music has long been associated with the LSO, and Sir Antonio Pappano has chosen one of the composer’s most iconic pieces for his first season as Chief Conductor. ‘The LSO has a history of playing Berlioz’s music, and that was important to me,’ he says. ‘One has to be absolutely faithful to the history of the Orchestra.’
This performance will end at approximately 7.40pm, with no interval (timings subject to change).
