Commemorating Shostakovich

A glittering constellation of performers join Evgeny Kissin for an immersive dive into three works that together span Shostakovich’s creative evolution the last a soul-searing farewell.

Four Verses of Captain Lebyadkin is Shostakovich's final vocal work and the last premiere of his work he ever attended; the mournful, melodic lines of Piano Trio No 2 were played at the composer's own public funeral service; and the Viola Sonata is Shostakovich’s last completed work, the final pages hovering on the cusp of eternity.

Anchored by the irrepressible Evgeny Kissin, four renowned performers bring unique insights into Shostakovich’s complex musical psyche: celebrated bass singer, Alexander Roslavets joins for Four Verses of Captain Lebyadkin; the legendary Gidon Kremer, a violinist who turns ‘sparkle into pure magic’ (The Los Angeles Times) joins regular cellist of Kissin's piano trio, Giedrė Dirvanauskaitė for Piano Trio No 2; and Maxim Rysanov, ‘a prince among viola players’ (Gramophone) rounds out this star-studded recital.

This performance will end at approximately 9.15pm with a 20 minute interval.
