Director Sunao Katabuchi’s coming-of-age drama follows a young Japanese woman struggling to live a normal life in the final days of the Second World War.
Directed by Studio Ghibli alum and one-time Hayao Miyazaki disciple Sunao Katabuchi (Princess Arete, Mai Mai Miracle), the film pays attention to detail in its dramatisation of the daily struggles of life during wartime, and in the recreation of Hiroshima City and its surrounding landscape – details made all the more bitterly tragic by the events of 6 August 1945.
Although Katabuchi turned to crowd-funding to finance this adaptation of Fumiyo Kōno’s manga series it was quickly embraced by the Japanese public and the critical establishment alike. In 2017 it won the Japan Academy Film Prize for Animation of the Year and, later was commended by the Hiroshima for Global Peace campaign for “[reminding] us of how invaluable our mundane everyday life is, how cruel the war can be which robs us of it unreasonably, and how precious peace is.”

This screening will be hosted by Michael Leader and Jake Cunningham, creators of the animation-focused podcast series Ghibliotheque and authors of the Ghibliotheque Anime Movie Guide.

We are within walking distance from a number of London Underground stations, the closest being Barbican, St Paul’s and Moorgate. The nearest train stations are Liverpool Street and Farringdon. Bus Route 153 runs directly past the Barbican along Chiswell Street

Access
Level access from the Pit floor foyer only to the two boxes (see Mobility below). All other seats lead off stepped aisles.
Mobility
Two boxes at the rear of the auditorium each have space for one wheelchair user and a companion. Please book early and ask for these seats.

Hearing facility

Access
Cinemas 2 & 3 are located at Beech Street, a short walk from the Barbican Centre’s main Silk Street entrance. There are a couple of steep, dropped kerbs and an incline to negotiate between the two sites. Level access from Beech Street.
Mobility
Each auditorium has three permanent wheelchair spaces (two in the third row and one in the front row) and 153 fixed seats with capacity for a further three spaces in the front row. Access to each auditorium is up a ramp. There are also a number of seats with step-free access.

Hearing facility
