Sir Antonio Pappano introduces Vaughan Williams’ poignant Fifth Symphony.
The mood is relaxed in this early-evening concert, with introductions from the conductor and LSO musicians.
Ralph Vaughan Williams’ Symphony No 5 reaches for hope in the midst of war. This sophisticated, original work deeply moved audiences who heard it at its 1943 premiere. Its bittersweet melodies and transcendent climax seem to offer listeners a vision of future peace.
Sir Antonio Pappano, Chief Conductor Designate, and the LSO follow up their stunning pre-pandemic performances of Vaughan Williams’ Fourth and Sixth Symphonies with this magnificent take on his popular Fifth.
‘The art of music above all the other arts is the expression of the soul of a nation’ – Ralph Vaughan Williams
This performance will end at approximately 7.45pm, with no interval.
