Christmas with Connaught Brass

with Zeynep Özsuca

The members of Connaught Brass sitting in a row in front of a white wall, their instruments placed on the floor in front of them.

For its Barbican debut, multi-prize-winning Connaught Brass despatches season’s greetings in a cracker of a programme that gift wraps festive joy with interludes of serene reflection.

Christmas is a time for tradition. Together with a romp through the exuberant final chorus of Bach’s Christmas Oratorio, the Connaughts savour seasonal Tchaikovsky, while an Advent carol wraps itself around wistful Nina Simone. But there’s room for innovation too. And as well as a 150th anniversary nod to planetary Holst, there’s Terry Johns’ piano-gilded meditation inspired by the stained glass of Eduardo Paolozzi triptych in St Giles’ Cathedral Edinburgh.

The Great Birmingham Brass Festival described Connaught Brass as ‘a thrilling young ensemble’. And having taken first prize at the inaugural Philip Jones International Brass Ensemble Competition in 2019, Lucerne Festival to Ferrandou Musique, the dynamic fivesome are going places. Theirs is an ensemble of virtuosi, open minds, and a curiosity that spans over 500 years of repertoire.
