BBC Symphony Orchestra/Wigglesworth

Rites Remade

A picture of Ryan Wigglesworth who wears a blue shirt and stands against a black background. Two circles swirl around him in different shades of pink.

Violence, delicacy and sounds to liberate the imagination: as Ryan Wigglesworth and the BBC Symphony Orchestra put Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring at the centre of a century of sonic adventure.

110 years ago, Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring blew classical music wide open - and we’re still dealing with the aftershock. Sounds become colours, orchestras erupt like volcanoes and a century dances to the pure, liberating energy of unchained rhythm. It’s an explosive climax to a concert in which sound itself is the star.

Conductor Ryan Wigglesworth is joined by recorder phenomenon Erik Bosgraaf in Anna Meredith’s Origami Songs as part of a sequence of music that swings from fragile beauty to elemental force, including music by Arvo Part and a rare performance of Stefan Niculescu’s stunning, explosive 1970s classic Ison II. Prepare to re-imagine the way you listen.

Ilan Volkov has had to withdraw from this concert. We are grateful to Ryan Wigglesworth who will conduct in his place at short notice.

This performance will finish at approximately 9pm, including a 20-minute interval
