Borrowing elements of americana, punk and avant-pop, singer-songwriter Neko Case is a force of nature as she performs songs from Hell-On, her first solo album in five years.
These are strange, enticing songs that never do what is expected of them and that took on new meaning after Case’s house burnt down halfway through the recording process. Despite this, her songwriting remains optimistic, creating miniature worlds that reflect life in all its beauty and unpredictability. ‘I write songs from a feeling of solidarity with folks who feel alone or isolated’, she says, ‘I think I'm trying to comfort people in this way’.
Featuring contributions from Beth Ditto, Mark Lanegan, k.d. lang and others, Hell-On was produced by Case in collaboration with Björn Yttling (Peter Bjorn & John). Uniting aspects of her sound from across her career, this is some of her boldest – and catchiest – songwriting to date.
Support comes from Scottish Album of the Year winner Kathryn Joseph.
