Les Liaisons Dangereuses (15)

EFG London Jazz Festival 2017

Film still from Les Liaisons Dangereuses

We pay tribute to the legendary jazz pianist Thelonious Monk’s centenary and the recent passing of the actress Jeanne Moreau with a screening of this daring film that brought their artistry together.

Jeanne Moreau stars as Juliette, a woman in an open marriage where both she and her husband Valmont (played by Gerard Philipe) help each other engage in extramarital affairs. When Juliette’s latest lover leaves her for a young Cecile, she encourages Valmont to seduce the young woman as revenge. Things take a turn, with relationships beginning to merge and new problems start arising.

Directed by the filmmaker behind controversial films such as And God Created Woman and Barbarella, the film is a provocative exploration of taboos and new liberal lifestyles. While Thelonious Monk’s outstanding score selected from his songbook perfectly captures the inner turmoil of the characters and the boundaries each choose to cross.
