David Bailey
Birth of the Cool
Featuring over 200 prints, this exhibition explored photographer David Bailey’s dynamic career from 1957 to 1969.
Starting with Bailey’s early career as a professional photographer and charting the development of his radical fashion photography, this exhibition explored the breadth of his creative output. It also featured previously unseen photographs from Bailey’s own archive and images of classic 60s icons such as Lennon and McCartney, Mick Jagger, Catherine Deneuve, Michael Caine and Marianne Faithfull.
Powerful portraits of actors, musicians and models were presented together with specially produced large format colour portraits from the ‘East End’ series. The show also included a group of 90s portraits of actors including Ralph Fiennes and Johnny Depp, fashion shots of supermodels amongst them Naomi Campbell and Amber Valetta, and a special series of documentary photographs produced for The Big Issue.
