Barbican announces Dur Dur Band plus special guests
Legendary Somali pop group Dur Dur Band bring their blend of disco and funk to the Barbican alongside a host of special guests, including the next generation of Somali pop singers.
Dur Dur Band rose to prominence through the Somali capital Mogadishu’s ‘golden age’ of music in mid-1980s, and have since released music on prominent labels such as Awesome Tapes From Africa and Analog Africa. Recently, they have regrouped with many of the original founding members, with a mission to preserve and share Somali music with the world.
In their Barbican show they will be joined by a new crop of Somali musicians, as well as the country’s pop legends, including Fadumina, Abdi Hani Hashi, Habib Sharabi, Farhia Fiska and Najma Nashad for a night of international music-making. The performance will include both their classic hits as well as experiments with new sound textures and analogue synths, via a new partnership with Unidentified Dance Objects. A collaboration with female-led arts collective Somali Arts Foundation will provide visuals throughout the performance.
