Desyatnikov invokes not just folk material but also jazz and Steve Reich — and Stravinsky (The New Yorker). Desyatnikov’s style, delicate, subtle and infused with wittiness and irony is very much of our time, and taps into the Russian classical tradition. The precise rhythmic structures make his music inspiring material for choreographers, and Alexey Ratmansky has staged five ballets on his scores.
This programme features Desyatnikov’s chamber pieces — starting from his landmark Sketches to Sunset, a mix of tango and klezmer music written in the early 1990s, up to Songs of Bukovina, a new piece loosely based on Ukrainian folk songs premiered in 2017. The programme will be performed by an ensemble of brilliant musicians led by the champion of Desyatnikov’s music pianist Alexey Goribol.
