Niladri Kumar

Seduced by the Sitar

Niladri Kumar

An evening of deeply moving sitar ragas, performed by one of the most promising artists from a new generation of Indian Classical musicians.

Since garnering an international audience in the days of maestros Ustad Vilayat Khan and Pandit Ravi Shankar, the sound of the sitar has captivated the world. This is an opportunity to witness a performance from one of the instrument’s modern masters. Accompanied by tabla and jori player Sukhwinder Singh, Kumar unravels moving ragas with his signature style of fluid melody, bent notes and flurries of virtuosic improvisation.

Born into a family of musicians Kumar, a fifth generation sitarist, showed preternatural skill towards playing the instrument at the age of just four. His natural talent for music was thereafter extensively moulded and disciplined under the tutelage of his Guru and Father Pandit Kartick Kumar. Throughout his career he has embraced the versatility and depth of India’s iconic instrument. Open to new trends, Niladri decided to push the boundaries and go beyond his comfort zone - inventing his own instrument - an electric sitar that he named as a 'Zitar'.
