Parent & Baby Screening: Funny Cow (15)

still-funny cow

The story of an aspiring, working-class comedienne is a hilarious and heart-breaking charmer.

Set in the 1970s, Funny Cow is a tough, streetwise film centred on aspiring comedienne in Northern England. Ill-treatment by men is something our eponymous heroine is grimly used to, from childhood beatings to an abusive husband (scriptwriter Tony Pitts, on terrifying form), but begins to stand up both to her husband and the sexist working mens’ club circuit.

So often dazzling on stage and television, Maxine Peake is hilarious and heart-breaking. There's fine support too from cast-against-type Paddy Considine as her middle-class paramour and a swooning, melancholic soundtrack by Richard Hawley.

'Maxine Peake blazes … her anti-heroine explodes like a firework' Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian
