Turning Earth Makers' Market

Tessa Barrett, is a highly experienced potter and teacher at Turning Earth. She will be demonstrating various hand building techniques, such as making pinch bowls, coiling and slab building. Tessa’s demonstrations will start on the hour from 12pm to 5pm.

Cat Santos has been a printmaker for many years and has more recently been exploring methods to print on clay. She will be demonstrating mono printing and screen transfer printing on clay slabs at 1pm.

Tom Kemp will be ‘throwing’ vessels on a wheel. The word ‘throw’ comes from an old English word, ‘thrawan’, meaning to twist or turn. He’ll be using porcelain, a fine, white clay mixture which can be fired to very high temperatures. Tom will make some larger, individual vases and also some smaller bowls and other shapes, ‘off the hump’. This is a technique used commonly in South East Asia where a small item is thrown at the top of a large lump of clay then cut off with a thread, ready to make the next piece. Tom’s demonstrations will be at the start of each hour, from 12pm to 5pm.

Nick Aplin is a professional potter, who throws a variety of shapes on the wheel, including mugs, bottles, vases and goblets. He is also a teacher at Turning Earth, and will be demonstrating basic throwing skills. Members of the public are invited to seek him out in the Conservatory and have a go under his guidance. Open to all levels….beginners welcome!

Ryan Barrett works with both textiles and ceramics. He likes to experiment with different ceramic techniques and forms and has been developing a 3D printer that uses raw porcelain to make intricate forms. He will be demonstrating this interesting combination of modern technology and traditional materials, as well as selling some of his finished pieces. The 3D printed will be running on and off throughout the day.
