From early pioneers to groundbreaking contemporary animators, the artists in this programme employ a range of highly individual approaches to explore ideas of space, the movement of objects, and the nature of perception. Formal abstraction mixes with the personal and fantastical, often in the same film, and the diverse techniques on display show the breadth and potential of animation as an art form.
This programme celebrates experimentation in animation, with works by artists unafraid to push the medium into new territory. These immersive and vibrant films have a distinctly hybrid nature, mixing unlikely combinations of tone, subject and technique.
Particles in Space is part of the Edge of Frame Weekend 2018, a celebration of experimental animation taking place over three days at Barbican, BFI Southbank and Close-Up Cinema. Curated by Edwin Rostron and supported by Arts Council England and Jerwood Charitable Foundation.
Several of the artists join us for a Q&A following the screening.
If you'd like to see both Edge of Frame screenings, you can see both events for £15 when tickets are booked in the same transaction. See this page for details
