The Magino Village Story: Raising Silkworms+ Intro (U*)

Fashion in Film Festival

Two people smile at the camera, waring outdoor clothing in a black and white photograph

An unusual insight into sericulture that celebrates the animal, botanical, earthy and craft-based origins of silk.

Following the life of silkworms, from when they hatch in spring and feast on mulberry leaves to when they build their cocoons in autumn this film takes you to deep into the mountains of northern Japan.

Made by Ogawa Productions, a collective founded by the documentary filmmaker Ogawa Shinsuke in 1968, this film's depiction of land and agriculture established their preferred way of working and have been combining farming and filmmaking for over 15 years.

It compiles footage by Ogawa’s wife Shiraishi Yoko, enlarged from 8mm to 16mm film, in a patient portrait of animal and manual labour, seasonal time and land.

We are joined by 2024 BBC New Generation Thinker Becca Voelcker who writes on art, film, and visual culture with a particular focus on politics and ecology.
