Commemorating Shostakovich: Evgeny Kissin and friends

Gidon Kremer, Alexander Kniazev, Maxim Ryzanov

Black and white photo of Evgeny Kissin sitting at a piano

A glittering constellation of string players joins Evgeny Kissin for an immersive dive into three sonatas that together span Shostakovich’s creative evolution the last a soul-searing farewell.

The klezmer tradition meets funeral bells in the late Violin Sonata; composed some three decades earlier, the Cello Sonata speaks to a composer not turned 30 yet already hailed as a champion for the future of Russian music; and the Viola Sonata is Shostakovich’s last completed work, the final pages hovering on the cusp of eternity.

Anchored by the irrepressible Evgeny Kissin who returns with a solo piano recital in June three internationally renowned performers bring unique insights into Shostakovich’s complex musical psyche: the legendary Gidon Kremer, a violinist who turns ‘sparkle into pure magic’ (The Los Angeles Times) is joined by Maxim Rysanov, ‘a prince among viola players’ (Gramophone); and Alexander Kniazev a cellist blessed with ‘an original turn of mind and a formidably accomplished technique’ (BBC Music Magazine).
