Kokomo City (18) (AD)

A woman looks at a teddy bear in a black and white photograph

D. Smith directs this unapologetically raw insight into the lives of four Black transgender sex workers, shot in black and white.

Directed by two-time Grammy nominee D. Smith, Kokomo City, on the face of it, is an investigation of the lives of Black transgender sex workers. What this film manages to achieve goes much deeper than that. Posing questions around gender, gang culture and societal expectations, D. Smith digs under the surface of US culture to reveal the lived lives and experiences of those working to survive.

Accessible for any audience, unfiltered, unabashed, and unapologetic, Smith and her subjects smash the trendy standard for authenticity, offering a refreshing rawness and vulnerability unconcerned with purity and politeness.
