We invited Barbican Members to respond to the exhibition themes of: social change, identity, representation. A curated selection of works will be showcased on the night.

Explore the work and career of Carrie Mae Weems in this first major UK exhibition dedicated to one of the most influential American artists working today, celebrated for her exploration of identity, power, desire and social justice through work that challenges representations of race, gender, and class.

Curator Raúl Muñoz de la Vega gives a fascinating insight into the exhibition, exploring key themes across Carrie Mae Weems' multi-disciplinary work across photography, film and installation, including the challenging of representations of race, gender, and class.
Life Around the Kitchen Table Zine-Making Workshop with Artizine
Conservatory Terrace, 6-9pm
Celebrate Carrie Mae Weems’ work by making your own zine inspired by her extraordinary photographs, interweaving themes of race, class, gender, friendship, love, loss, power and motherhood.
About Artizine
Ioana Simion is a visual creative and arts facilitator, who believes creativity and play are essential for self-development. Ioana started Artizine in 2019, as a platform aiming to connect communities together through zine-making.
Artizine is a not-for-profit initiative dedicated to encouraging individuals to be creative through engaging and accessible art-making workshops. All the Artizine facilitators operate on a zero-waste guideline, which explores not only the physicality of reducing materials and embracing new, sustainable ways of making, but also reducing thoughts and creating space for mindfulness and wellbeing through art.

DJs from Sisu Collective
Garden Room, 6-9.30pm
DJs from the collective Sisu will be taking over our Garden Room, so you can enjoy some refreshing drinks from our bar and vibe to a wonderful selection of tracks.
Spinning records on the night is Jacki-E, an established techno and drum and bass DJ / Producer from Northamptonshire. With influences rooted in techno, jungle, dnb and an ethos emerging from the acid house raves and festivals of the early 90's, Jacki-E has developed her own style of energetic and fiery dance music. She hosts radio shows A Darker Wave and Draw The Line and has released tracks with record labels including UPUK Records, Get Physical and Nahual Records.
Joining her is ((( CLEOPATRA ))) whose distinctive genre-defying sets merge tracks across funky house, soul, acid jazz, electronic, hip/trip-hop, Afrobeat/Brazilian-infused funk and more. Listen to her exciting remixes on Soundcloud.

Sisu is a community providing a platform to educate, inspire and showcase aspiring women and non-binary DJs, producers and behind-the-scenes roles. Their vision is to create educational and inspirational spaces to enhance national and international opportunities, connections and pathways into the music industry.

Conservatory
Location
The Barbican Conservatory is located on Level 3, if you’re coming from inside the main Barbican building.
From the Barbican highwalks, follow signs to the ‘Barbican Centre’. Walking from Barbican tube station, you’ll see a steps with ‘Art Gallery’ above them, these will lead you up to the Sculpture Court where you'll see a sign for the Conservatory.

Access
The Conservatory is on the gallery floor (level 3), reached via the main lifts. Access Automatic glass doors (120cm wide) lead outside from the gallery floor and continue down a ramp (1:12). The Conservatory is on your right, entered through double doors (135cm wide). The Sculpture Court is on your left, up three steps or via a ramp.
Mobility
Limited access for wheelchair users and people with restricted mobility due to steps in some areas.
Assistance dogs
Assistance dogs are welcome.
