Carolee Schneemann (1939–2019) was a trailblazer, whose experimental work defies easy categorisation. Across six decades, from the late 1950s onwards, she experimented with paint, found objects, her own body, text, performance, film, and multimedia installations. She explored her own sexual expression, the objectification and oppression of women, human-animal relationships, war, cancer, mortality, and more.
